Malawi Airlines has expanded its flight schedule with additional services between Lilongwe and Johannesburg, alongside extra domestic flights connecting Lilongwe and Blantyre. The new services, which came into effect on 24 August 2026, provide greater flexibility for both international visitors and those travelling within Malawi.
The additional Johannesburg flight operates every day except Monday, departing Lilongwe at 16:50 and arriving in Johannesburg at 19:05. The return service leaves Johannesburg at 20:00, arriving back in Lilongwe at 22:15. The later timings provide travellers with another option between Malawi and one of southern Africa’s key international aviation hubs.
Malawi Airlines has also added further domestic services between Lilongwe and Blantyre, improving connections between the country’s two main cities. The additional flights operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, departing Lilongwe at 10:45 and arriving in Blantyre at 11:25. The return flight leaves Blantyre at 11:55 and arrives in Lilongwe at 12:35.
The expanded domestic schedule is particularly welcome for visitors planning to explore different parts of Malawi. Lilongwe provides a convenient gateway to Central and Northern Malawi, while Blantyre is ideally positioned for journeys into the south, helping travellers combine more of the country within a single trip.
Alongside the additional flights, Malawi Airlines has also upgraded services on its Harare and Lusaka routes to Boeing 737 aircraft, providing increased capacity, Business Class seating and greater comfort.
Malawi Airlines is Malawi’s national flag carrier and is jointly owned by the Government of Malawi and Ethiopian Airlines. Its network includes regional services to destinations including Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lusaka, Harare and Dar es Salaam, as well as domestic connections between Lilongwe and Blantyre.
The latest schedule expansion is another positive development for Malawi’s accessibility, providing visitors with greater choice when travelling to the Warm Heart of Africa and making it easier to connect between the country’s key tourism regions.
