In an urgent effort to save one of the world’s rarest antelopes, four critically endangered eastern mountain bongos are being relocated from European zoos to the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy.
Native only to central Kenya’s highland forests, these striking chestnut-coated animals have been severely threatened by hunting and habitat loss. By integrating these new arrivals into an existing managed herd, conservationists hope to significantly boost the population’s genetic diversity and long-term survival prospects. To support this vital reintroduction program, advanced AI-enhanced camera systems will be used to safely monitor the herd’s behavior, health, and reproductive success without disturbing the animals.
